Meditation is a mental practice that involves focusing one's mind on an object, a thought, or simply turning one's attention inward to the mind itself. Meditation can be practiced in many different ways in many different faiths; it is often associated with Asian religions and philosophies such as Hinduism and Buddhism, but it has been incorporated into both Eastern and Western belief systems as well. Meditation can be performed while sitting still, reclining, walking, or even during physical activity, such as yoga.
Some practitioners meditate to examine and improve themselves, and others do it to bring themselves closer to the divine. Others use it as a tool to reduce stress, and some meditate to improve their health. Most will agree, though, that meditation is a wonderful, calming practice.
